Things I wish I knew when I went through it for the first time.

For every parent of a freshman who is about to walk into a dorm room and walk out changed. This one’s for you.

Let me set the scene.

Providence, Rhode Island. A cart piled high. A daughter who has been ready for this moment since approximately her sophomore year of high school. And a mother, me, who thought she was also ready because she had spent three weeks curating the perfect powder blue, French-granny-chic dorm room and had emotionally prepared herself with a podcast, a therapy session, and a very optimistic attitude.

I was not ready.

But you know what? Neither is anyone else, and nobody is actually telling you that, or telling you what to DO about it. So that’s what this is. The guide I wish I’d had. Equal parts practical checklist and emotional survival kit for parents sending off sons, daughters, and everyone in between.

Because here’s the thing I noticed the moment I stepped into that dorm building - the girls’ rooms looked like Pinterest came to life. The boys’ rooms looked like the set of a prison documentary.

My daughter Lucia had been building her mood board for months before move-in. Powder blues. Vintage florals. The mood board is actually a life skill in disguise. Knowing what you like, being able to communicate it, making intentional choices about your own space, that’s not just aesthetics. That’s self-knowledge. And whether your kid has fifty boards or zero, it’s worth having the five-minute conversation before you start buying: What do you want this room to feel like?

If your son stares at you blankly, try this: show him three rooms, and he picks the one that feels most like him. That’s your brief. Run with it.

What to do before you buy anything:

The Prep: What I Actually Did (And How Long It Actually Took)

I need to be honest with you about the timeline, because every resource I found made this sound like a weekend project. This is not a weekend project.

I spent three weeks on this at a minimum. Three weeks of scrolling every night, tracking down the right duvet, the right lamp, the right little things that would make the room feel like her. Most schools give you a window, often something like nine to five, to get your kid settled. This sounds like a lot of time. It is not a long time.

What I had not planned for was the walk away from the dorm.

What actually works on move-in day:

• Do the room first, feelings later. You have a job to do and a finite window. Save the long conversations.

• Leave them a small “night one” basket. Water bottle, a snack, a mini toiletry kit, her favorite tea or whatever their thing is. The first night alone in a new place is disorienting. This small gesture matters more than almost anything else you’ve packed.

• Plan your own evening before you arrive. Do not leave your five o’clock to chance. Book a restaurant. Have a friend come. Know where you’re going. Trust me on this one.

The Goodbye: What Nobody Actually Prepares You For

I walked those streets in Providence after drop-off, and I have never felt anything quite like it in my life.

It was not sadness exactly, she was fine, she was thriving, she was exactly where she was supposed to be. It was something else. A very specific kind of grief that doesn’t have a clean name, because what ended wasn’t a relationship but a chapter, and it didn’t ask your permission before it closed.

I tried to breathe through it. I tried to feel all the good things, which are also real and true and existed simultaneously. I cried anyway. I ate pizza. I drank more wine than I will specify here. I dealt with it.

The next morning I went to say a proper goodbye before heading to the airport. I sat on a bench outside her dorm for a bit and struck up a conversation with a man who was clearly also in the thick of his feelings. I offered him a matcha. Two strangers, two drop-offs, one very therapeutic oat milk latte.

Then at the airport: full, uncontrollable, extremely public waves of tears. I bought myself a Dunkin’ donut. I had absolutely earned it. I sat there with my donut, crying in the way that you cry when you’ve given up caring what strangers think and my phone buzzed.

A text from Lucia: Hey mommy. How are you doing? I’m gonna miss you.

I sent her a photo back.

She sent me a string of laughing emojis. And I exhaled for the first time in about thirty-six hours.

On the plane home I was seated next to a man who had just dropped off his daughter. The couple in front of us turned around and said, unprompted, “How do you think we feel? We just dropped off our twins.” The four of us talked the entire flight. It was absurd and warm and exactly what I needed.

What actually helps in those first 48 hours:

• Stay one extra day if you can. Not to hover, just in case there’s something to sort out, a return to make, a breakfast together. But no more than that. One day. Then go.

• Plan your own evening and your own morning. An empty hotel room with nothing to do is its own kind of brutal. Fill the time intentionally.

• Find your people. The other drop-off parents are everywhere. On the bench outside the dorm. In the airport. On your flight. They are all going through the exact same thing and they will absolutely get a matcha with you.

• Know that it passes. Not in a dismissive way, in a real way. Within a week you’ll be talking every day, there will always be something to help solve, and before you know it they’re asking about internships and planning their six-week holiday homecoming. Time moves. Be kind to yourself while it does.

The Boys’ Rooms: The Moment Everything Changed for Me

The next morning, before I left, something happened that I have not been able to stop thinking about.

Some of the moms of the boys came to see Lucia’s room. They stood in the doorway, looked around at the warm light, the carefully chosen things, the space that felt like an actual place to live and then they thought about their sons’ rooms down the hall.

The boys had brought sheets. Maybe a small rug.

That was essentially it.

The Actual List: What to Buy, What to Skip, What to Leave Home

This is my real, non-generic, field-tested breakdown, for boys AND girls, because both deserve a room that doesn’t look like a federal holding facility.

The Non-Negotiables (Get These. Don’t Skip Them.)

🔆 Lighting The overhead lighting in dorm rooms is fluorescent misery. It is the enemy of mood, of sleep, of the will to live. A small lamp or warm string lights is the single highest-return purchase you will make. Do not skip this. Do not let your son skip this because he says he “doesn’t care.” He cares. He just doesn’t know he cares yet.

🛏 Mattress Topper College mattresses are thin, tired, and have lived many previous lives. A good mattress topper costs around $40–$80 and is worth every cent. Sleep is everything freshman year. This is not a luxury, it’s an investment in their GPA.

🧺 Twin XL Sheets In a Color They’ll Actually Like Not white. Not institutional beige. Something that reflects who they are. For your son who “doesn’t have an opinion”: navy, forest green, charcoal, a classic stripe. Literally any of these make a room look intentional. Pick one.

🪴 One Plant One. Small. Plant. Life in the room changes the energy in a way that is genuinely hard to explain until you’ve experienced it. A pothos is unkillable. Get a pothos.

🔌 Power Strip with USB Ports Multiple devices. One outlet. This is not optional. Get the one with surge protection because you will not be there to worry about it and you want to worry about it a little less.

🧰 A Small Toolkit Hammer, screwdriver (flathead and Phillips), a couple of picture hooks, Command strips. Nobody on the floor will have these. Your kid will be a hero by day two. Take credit for this.

🩹 A Real First Aid Kit Not a travel kit. An actual stocked kit: Advil, Tylenol, Mucinex, Tums, a thermometer, a couple of cold packs, some bandages. She will get sick at 11pm on a Sunday when the health center is closed. This kit is the difference between managing it and spiraling.

🧴 Double-Sided Tape + Command Hooks Walls cannot be damaged. Command everything. Bring more than you think you need. You will use all of them.

Wait on These Until You’ve Seen the Room

• Rugs: measure first. Every room has a different layout and a different amount of floor to work with.

• Wall art: check what’s allowed on the walls and see the space first.

• Extra storage: figure out what they actually need rather than guessing.

Leave These at Home

• Half the wardrobe. Closets are very small. Rotate seasonally; ship things as needed.

• Anything you bought because it felt like you should bring it, not because they’ll actually use it.

• Decorative pillows beyond two. I say this having learned the hard way.

• The full-size anything. Full-size hairdryer, full-size this, full-size that. Space is at a premium. Go small.

And know that what you’re feeling, that particular, unnameable grief that isn’t quite grief is just love doing what love does when it has to learn a new shape.

You did good. They’re ready.
